For International Women’s Day, we’ve put together some of the most inspiring and groundbreaking women in the art world in India giving us life goals.
Noelle Kadar Director of the Sculpture Park at Madhavendra Palace in Jaipur, Noelle Kadar has been instrumental in building the Park’s programme and developing it’s future goals, through engaging in conversations between national and international artists, curators, and cultural organizations. Kadar has also served as the international director of the Indian Art Fair in New Delhi, where she spearheaded its rebranding and acquisition by MCH, the parent company of Art Basel, and the growth of the India Art Fair VIP and patrons program.
Shilpa Gupta A contemporary artist, Shilpa Gupta’s practice brings to attention the ways in which people, place, and experience is defined and limited by censorship, security, boarders, and classification. Gupta’s work has been showcased internationally including at Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, Museum of Modern Art, Serpentine Gallery, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Mori Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Kiran Nadar Museum and Devi Art Foundation. Most recently, her sound installation For, in your tongue, I cannot fit — 100 Jailed Poets, is on display at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2018-19.
Kiran Nadar Founder and chairperson of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, philanthropist, and avid art collector, Kiran Nadar began India’s first philanthropic private museum. The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art spans two spaces with 34,000 square feet of museum space, and host a variety of educational programmes for children. Most recently, the museum is collaborating with the Ministry of Culture and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to present and curate the India Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale, marking the first in history. Kiran Nadar is also an International Council member of the Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA).
Anita Dube Art historian, critic, and contemporary artist, Anita Dube’s practice is concerned with personal and societal memory, history, politics, and loss. Through her work, Dube also investigates the concept of power, and the resistance against overarching forces by women and individuals. Dube has been showcased internationally at Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, the Yokohama Triennale, the VII Havana Biennale, the Stephen Lawrence Gallery, Centre Pompidou, and nationally at Nature Morte and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art amongst others. Dube was also cofounder of KHOJ, the International Artists’ Association in New Delhi. Most recently, Anita Dube curated the Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2018-19, becoming the first ever female curator of the biennale.
